Every once and a while something comes along and you think “this is what I’ve been waiting for”, and for me Cozza Frenzy is it for 2009.
I’m heavily into dubstep at the moment and other bass driven genres (Fake Blood, Count & Sinden, etc.), so to find an artist album that meets both those requirements, makes it a gem in my book.
What you have here is pure beats music summed up perfectly by “Boombox”, the opening track. It has a hint of the dubstep grind, but a little toned down. Bass heavy, rhythmic, with tweeks and bumps. Then as you move through the album the dubstep beats get bigger, the bass gets heavier and you’ll be holding your breathe waiting for what the next track will bring. In places the dark soundtracks are complimented perfectly by vocals – unlike a lot of dubstep with it’s MC shouting out over the top, you get full on, in your face, rap.
Lorin Ashton from the US (aka Bassnectar) isn’t someone I’d heard of. I didn’t recognise any of the tracks on the album, but perhaps they’re on a Skream, Rusko or Caspa mix somewhere, but if so I’d missed them. But this album could easily make it into any of the most respectable dubstep mixes that are around – although a couple of the softer tracks (“I Wish I Was a Hipster” is far from dark or dubstep) wouldn’t, most of the tracks would be worthy; perhaps the sound is not as warped as some dubstep can be, but they’d get me moving on a dancefloor for sure.
