If you know that Brighton duo, South Central, have opened for Pendulum and the Prodigy as well as DJ’d for Rage Against the Machine and Iron Maiden, then you’ll have some insight into how eclectic this debut album really is and just what kind of sounds to expect.

An eclectic sounding this album really is. It’s scattered with hard bassline tracks with rock overtones (e.g. the opening track “Nu Control”), french house sounding tracks (e.g. “Demons”) as well as tracks verging on dubstep with a 90s rock feel to them. And lets not forget that “Crawl” features the legend that is Gary Numan.

I’d say if your a fan of the heavier side of dance music (the sort that “grown ups” say “it just sounds like noise” when they hear it) mixed with rock riffs then you’ll love this. The Prodigy fans will also like what they hear, as will New Order and Cure fans.

Day I Die (The Toxic Avenger Remix)
Day I Die (Baxen Remix)

This is a followup to my post about the release of “Day I Die” from eclectic electro rockers South Central – I’ve now had a chance to listen to the remixes that are available.

First up is a reworking from The Prodigy. The vocals remain whilst the backing track is mixed up, but to be honest not much to offer that the original doesn’t already.

Old Skool ravers, The Rhythm Masters, take the track in completely the other direction from the original. Gone are the grunge and grimey beats, instead a house soundtrack. The Toxic Avenger mix keeps some of the original dirty beats and interlaces it with house chords (a sort of half way house between the RM mix and the original) and Baxen’s remix replaces the grunge with beeps and tweaks, sort of Benny Bennasi style and this is one of the better versions of the track.

But, I’ve left the best to last. The Qemists don’t disappoint with their remix of the track. It’s a dubstep-ish monster – I say ish, because don’t expect full on dubstep vibe as they’ve kept their remix true to the original. But it’s just what this track needed – up’d tempo, grindy beats and a dubstep feel – in fact this could easily be mistaken for a Chase&Status track where they’ve mixed drum and bass with dubstep beats.

For the Qemists version alone you need this CD in your life, and if you like the South Central sound then look out for their album in April.

The Brighton duo, South Central, have an interesting sound. Whilst they may have produced some interesting remixes for the likes of Prodigy, Crystal Method and Toxic Avenger their own sound is a little rocky, electro and poppy in places.

Their latest track “Day I Die” is out on March 14th on Egregore Records and features remixes from The Prodigy, Qemists, The Toxic Avenger, Rhythm Masters and Baxen – so even their remixers are as eclectic as perhaps their music is. For me the original is a little too indie-rock sounding for my liking, but with the remix package I’m sure there’s something there for everyone.

There’s also a rather grim video which comes with a “health” warning by YouTube for it’s violent/adult nature. If you don’t like this kind of thing, then you probably won’t want to press play on the video below… if you like your music hard with dirty grungy beats and thrashing chords, then at least give it a listen.

Released back in April this track deserves a blog entry.

Featuring the vocal talents of Riz MC and Envy Flush is an excellent electro stomper, with plenty of beats and electro tweaks interlaced with the guest vocalist’s rapping which works well with the music and will appear to the UKG scene fans.

Various mixes are available from the melodic and minimalist Dan le Sac’s Do-Do remix, to the warped and beep tastic Skism Remix. And if that’s not enough then check out the South Central mix – fast, hard and techno it’s really different from the original but a worthy addition to the package. And dubheadz out there will want the Sukh Knight Remix. In fact it’s been a while that there’s been so many versions of one track which all appeal. Absolutely awesome and disappointing that this track hasn’t seen more airplay (and that I’ve left it till now to review/listen!).

Released on Distiller Records

Despite their LA sounding name, these South Central chaps are from Brighton. They’ve been rather busy over the last couple of years, since they released their EPs and tracks “The Owl of Minerva” – they’ve been remixing, on a tour with Pendulum and DJing amongst other things.

So, anyway, now they’re back with this “Demons” track taken from their forthcoming (in 2011) album “Society of the Spectacle”. “Demons” is a sort of dance/rock crossover (they claim to be the only true dance/rock crossover, so that makes sense) – pumping beats underline rocking guitars and Daft Punk synth-style vocals, with a hint of the Omen for the Demon effect. In some ways if Pendulum and Prodigy were to have a love child then maybe this would be it. It’s full of energy, and I actually quite like it!

Various mixes are available most of which don’t stray much from the original. The Reset! mix is different and interesting – much of the guitar hero of the original has gone replaced with chords, a reggae style beat a hyper beat (verging on being happy hardcore) and a grungy bass – in fact the track is so different, it could easily have been a different track if it wasn’t for the vocals.

On the B-Side is “Nietzsch versus Nuture”, which has a similar style as “Demons” but with more of a house/Daft Punk edge.

And finally, the promo I was sent also came with a 40min “promo mix” – not sure if that’s just for promos, but worth looking out for if it is available on the single when it is released or elsewhere as it is pretty damn tasty.

“Demons” is released on 25th October on Citizen Records.
